Ontario Associate Minister of Energy Reviews Terrestrial Energy Technology at Oakville Offices

Ontario company is developing the next generation clean energy technology

OAKVILLE, – February 18, 2020 – Ontario’s Associate Minister of Energy, the Hon. Bill Walker, visited Terrestrial Energy at its Oakville location to review the next generation of zero carbon energy production.  The Minister received an in-depth briefing and a tour of the expanding facilities for the revolutionary Integral Molten Salt Reactor (IMSR) technology. This uses a Generation IV nuclear technology.

“Small modular reactors have the potential to generate clean, low-cost and reliable energy for Ontario’s on-grid and off-grid generation while also creating high quality jobs,” said Associate Minister Walker. “I truly appreciated the opportunity to visit Terrestrial Energy Inc. and learn about all of the great work being done right here in Ontario on SMR technology.”

In December 2019, Premier Doug Ford signed a Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate with other provinces on the development and deployment of small modular reactors (SMRs) in Canada.

IMSR power plants use innovative technology to produce safe, reliable, clean and low-cost energy. In addition to electricity, IMSR power plants produce high-grade heat, and with strong load-following capability they are the clean power partner for variable renewable energy generation.

“Minister Walker’s leadership points the way for others to examine the benefits of Terrestrial Energy’s transformative innovation and its contribution to the world’s clean energy needs,” said Simon Irish, CEO of Terrestrial Energy. “Our affordable IMSR power plant will produce heat and electric power that is emission-free and competitive with fossil fuels. This technology has potential for high economic impact in Ontario.”

About Terrestrial Energy
Terrestrial Energy is a developer of Generation IV advanced nuclear power plants that use its proprietary Integral Molten Salt Reactor (IMSR®) technology. IMSR® technology represents true innovation in cost reduction, versatility and functionality of nuclear power plants. IMSR® power plants will provide zero-carbon, reliable, dispatchable, cost-competitive electric power and high-grade industrial heat for use in many industrial applications, such as chemical synthesis and desalination, and in so doing extend the application of nuclear energy far beyond electric power markets. They have the potential to make important contributions to industrial competitiveness, energy security, and economic growth. Their deployment will support rapid global decarbonization of the primary energy system by displacing fossil fuel combustion across a broad spectrum. Using an innovative design, and proven and demonstrated molten salt reactor technology, Terrestrial Energy is engaged with regulators and industrial partners to complete IMSR® engineering and to commission first IMSR® power plants in the late 2020s.
