Developing a clean energy technology that will transform how the world’s energy is produced

We are developing a reliable, resilient clean energy technology that will transform how the world produces energy.

Terrestrial Energy is an industry-leading Generation IV nuclear technology company committed to delivering reliable, resilient, emission-free, and cost-competitive energy with a truly innovative advanced reactor design of the Generation IV class.

Achieving the world’s climate and energy goals requires nothing less than a complete transformation of how the world’s energy is produced.

Nuclear energy is reliable, resilient, clean, and vastly scalable. Governments and experts have a generally held view that nuclear energy must play a leading role in the clean energy economy of the future if 2050 net-zero emissions targets are to be met.

“There is no credible path to climate stabilization that does not include a substantial role for nuclear power… A major expansion of nuclear power is essential to avoid dangerous anthropogenic interference with the climate system this century… We’ve done the math and we can’t power the world without nuclear energy.

Open letter to COP 21: Ken Caldeira, Kerry Emanuel, James Hansen, Tom Wigley

Conventional nuclear technology has been the clean energy workhorse for over half a century. It has proven its tremendous capacity to reduce carbon emissions. Today, it provides over 31 percent of the world’s clean energy, second only to hydroelectric power. However, conventional nuclear technologies are struggling against commercial and social challenges that are direct consequences of technology choices made many decades ago.

At Terrestrial Energy, we believe that we can do so much better than a nuclear power plant technology chosen over half a century ago by tapping into the progress from half a century of research, technological development and experience.

Terrestrial Energy brought together leading minds in business and technology to quickly commercialise a superior nuclear technology — one that harnesses nuclear energy’s enormous potential to deliver reliable, resilient, cost-competitive, and clean energy – and by so doing, transform how we produce the world’s energy.

Selected from many candidates, the most promising technology was one that had the greatest potential to reduce the cost of nuclear power and was proven and demonstrated to avoid long and costly development leadtimes. Terrestrial Energy then went to work with existing molten salt reactor technology and incorporated a series of unique and patented innovations to create a reactor for broad industrial use, the Integral Molten Salt Reactor, or IMSR®.

The IMSR® uses a Generation IV molten salt reactor technology in a truly innovative reactor design. IMSR® power plants deliver reliable, resilient, clean heat and power. Easier to build and finance, they will be less expensive and more versatile than today’s conventional nuclear technologies. One IMSR® power plant will generate 195 megawatts of electricity per unit. Two IMSR® power plants would power a city the size of Denver, Sheffield or Vancouver.

Terrestrial Energy is now engaged with world-leading advisors, industrial partners, and nuclear regulators. The first commercial IMSR® power plant is expected to come online in North America in the late 2020s. With Terrestrial Energy’s industrial partners, we can see hundreds of IMSR® power plants deployed.

IMSR® power plants are a clean energy alternative to burning fossil fuels – they are today’s energy game changer.

Some estimate that to meet the world’s climate and clean energy targets by 2050, we must invest many trillions of dollars every year for the next 30 years. Considering this, the commercial opportunity for the IMSR® is extraordinary.

Terrestrial Energy is meeting this urgent energy challenge and is leading the way to a bright energy future.
