Generation 4 Fission Technology Changes Equation on Green Hydrogen

By Simon Irish

By Simon Irish There is growing excitement around the world about the potential of green hydrogen as a major energy carrier in our clean energy transition, and for good reason. A kilogram of hydrogen holds more chemical energy that any other fuel and burns cleanly. This gives hydrogen the potential to be a direct substitute...

Where Does Terrestrial Energy’s Technology Fit into the UK’s Energy Landscape?

By Simon Irish

By Mike Drury “New nuclear” has enjoyed a good start to 2022. Breakthrough legislation on the financing of new nuclear projects has been followed by warm rhetoric from the Business Secretary, Kwasi Kwarteng, who talked about the need for the UK to “double down on new nuclear power” as “the more clean, affordable power we...

Nuclear Engineering International: A Solution Worth Its Salt

By Nuclear Engineering International

At Terrestrial Energy, we believe our Integral Molten Salt Reactor (IMSR) can vastly expand nuclear energy's capabilities. And because it is smaller, more economical and faster to build than traditional reactors, the Generation-4 IMSR power plant opens new markets. Terrestrial Energy has been working to get the IMSR technology to market by the 2020s. The design was the first advanced nuclear plant to successfully complete Phase 1 of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) Vendor Design Review, in October 2017, and in October this year it became the first to start Phase 2 of the CNSC review.

POWER magazine: Demonstration Advances to Produce Hydrogen Using Molten Salt Reactor Nuclear Technology

By POWER magazine

Terrestrial Energy USA, a company that is developing a fourth-generation molten salt nuclear reactor, has joined forces with Southern Co. and several U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) national labs, in a research and development (R&D) project that seeks to pin down whether its reactor technology can produce hydrogen efficiently using nuclear heat and power. DOE’s Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) says the demonstration could develop a “plausible path” to producing hydrogen gas using both thermal and electrical energy (78% thermal energy and 22% electrical energy) at a cost of less than $2/kilogram of hydrogen. Molten salt reactors are the “best choice” for high turn-down electrical power generation efficiency, it says.
